About Olhao

A short hop east of Faro, Olhão is the Algarve’s biggest fishing port, with an active waterfront and pretty, bustling lanes in its old quarters. There aren’t many sights, but the flat-roofed, Moorish-influenced neighbourhoods and North African feel make it a pleasant place to wander. The town’s fish restaurants draw the crowds, as does the morning fish and vegetable market on Avenida 5 de Outubro, best visited on Saturday. Olhão is also a springboard for Parque Natural da Ria Formosa’s sandy islands, Culatra and Armona, plus the park’s environmental centre at Quinta de Marim. The Algarve's coastline includes hundreds of sandy islets, salt lagoons, steep cliffs, sandy bays, and coves separated by mysterious grottoes and strange rock formations. Dotted along this diverse coastline you will find the charming little fishing ports and quaint, yet bustling towns, which have much to offer and are a pleasure to visit. Reknown for its miles of unspoilt beaches and natural waters, the Algarve also has the most beautiful countryside. Beautiful vistas, rolling hills, rural life, rich flora and fauna, along with plenty of ruins offers so much for one to discover and explore. Worth a visit are the Roman ruins of Estoi, the Moorish town of Silves, and the market town of Loulé. The Serra Monchique Mountains - the highest peak in the south - is a region full of character and remote villages surrounded by cork and chestnut woods. The interior retains much of its original charm and it is worthwhile for the visitor to explore this untouched region. The west coast also remains largely untouched.
